is all suffering the result of sin? like does a person get cancer bc someone else sinned?
do natural disasters happen bc of sin?

Read John 9, especially John 9:2.

Some natural disasters might be the result of sin, but I encourage you to avoid people who speculate about whose sin it might be.

Also a lot of suffering is the result of original sin.

i have been making the mistake of thinking my venial sins are "ok" - like if it's not a mortal sin i dont have to worry about it- not so much that it doesnt matter but like i dont have to work on them as urgently...when i think of Jesus' passion i always think it was our mortal sins that killed him- never thought about what effect our venial sins had. i just got the feeling yesterday that someone else could be suffering because of my over zealous eating

It is a good thing to avoid venial sins as well. It certainly can be a struggle, but we have the means in the sacraments to grow spiritually.
