In Psalm 71, Verse 7 declares: I have become a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge!
Please explain a portent to many.

My Study Bible says the Hebrew origin for portent meant a sign, rather than current English as a kind of prediction or omen. Thus the old man is saying that he has been a sign or symbol for many people who have known him of Love and Faith in God through his life, just as we Christians try to be.

Portent sounds like kind of an old fashioned word, what translation are you reading? Is it the KJV?

'Wonder' is an even worse translation

The New Century Bible Commentary notes that “nearly half of its (the word) occurrences in the OT refer to the plagues of Egypt.”

To the Hebrews the plagues meant deliverance; to the Egyptians the plagues meant destruction.

So... maybe the Psalmist is saying that he has become a sign of deliverance to the righteous and a sign of destruction to the wicked.
