A woman is married and gets a divorce. She then marries another guy. He abandons her, so they get a divorce. Her valid husband, the first guy, dies. Is she now free to marry someone else? I'd assumed so, but I'm not sure.

Yes, but she needs a declaration of nullity on the second marriage before she can licitly enter into a new marriage.

Yes, because you have to demonstrate that there were no undispensed impediments to the first marriage, because if there were, then it was invalid and you have to do a full investigation on the second marriage.

In concrete practice, were she Catholic at the time of the earlier marriages, a decree of nullity on the 2nd marriage would be very simple and not require the full process, since it would be a matter of defect of form (presuming that she would not have attempted marriage in a Catholic Church with the impediment of a previous bond still presumptively attached!)

If not, then it would be a little more complicated and require the full process.
