1. Is there an active cause for his Sainthood.

2. Does he only extrapolate and commentate on Aquinas? Or does he further progress and modify St. Thomas's ideas?

A question on Thomism in general...Did it end with Thomas? Sometimes when I hear people discuss or quote the Good Doctor, it's as if they're quoting scripture, but this doesn't mean that further advancements can't be made, correct?....Or is this just what modernism is :)

Though I understood modernism, among other things, as more of a jettisoning of thomistic Philosophy, rather than just some funky innovations.

This is correct, but it shouldn't be. :(

The problem is that no one in France is likely to start it, and he's probably controversial enough in the Order that no one there will either.

His support of the Vichy government in France constitutes tacit support of the Nazis and tacit support of the atrocities they committed. This presents an insurmountable obstacle to the canonization of ANYONE.

I don't think that's quite accurate, but there's no doubt that's the big road block. For the record, RGL was enamored of the emphasis the Vichy government put on the family.

Not that Rome is going to be any more sympathetic to his cause than France, but it seems to me that since he lived decades of his life in Rome that the cause would need to begin in Rome? Am I missing something?

Yes, I think his support of the Vichy government is concerning, but I don't think it's insurmountable. Jacques Maritain (who famously had a huge falling-out with Garrigou-Lagrange over this issue in particular) thought that Garrigou-Lagrange was a saint. I also think that it's noteworthy (though not strictly comparable) that people who have supported anti-popes have been canonized.

Support for the Vichy gov't will definitely be perceived as tacit support for the Nazis and their atrocities - and is, at least in the current climate, an insurmountable obstacle (as Doom says) but not only to canonization but to beatification or even veneration. No way the Church wants to touch that third rail.
