What kind of english hymns do you guys like either during Mass or to sing religiously? I'm particularly interested to hear what traditionalists like. I mean yeah, don't we all like Gregorian chant and latin, but are there any good ones in english in your opinion?

I also ask because I've been praying the Liturgy of the Hours, and I'm always hard pressed to find hymns I like. So far I've stuck with Faith of Our Fathers, Holy God We Praise Thy Name, Immaculate Mary, Love Divine All Love Excelling (written by a Protestant interestingly enough), All Hail Adored Trinity, among a few others.

The version of "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" in the breviary is a butchered travesty of the original. IMHO.

I grew up with the Episcopal Hymnal 1940, which is chock-full of great hymns

Is it the butchered one?

The hyms in the LOH are a bit of a sore point... (Pretty sure 'Amazing Grace' is in there :nooo: )

I have loved Eternal Father, Strong to Save ever since I heard it on a QVD retreat.

But generally I stick to Latin... Most English hymns I know are saccharine, or I am not confident in singing them

Or its counter-part, Almighty Father, Strong to Save.

I must admit I really don't know any Latin hymns. Maybe I should learn some :)

Favorite English hymn is "Alleluia, Sing To Jesus".

Start with the easy ones, Regina Caeli, Salve Regina, Pange Lingua. (Possibly some of the greatest...) :D

Two of those are antiphons (or anthems, if you like the English word) not hymns. :fyi:

I should revise my statement to say I don't know any *by heart*. I'm in my parish choir, and we have sung Latin pieces from time to time. I think probably my favorite that we've done is Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus". But I need to have the words/music in front of me.

When it comes to hymns, I am fond of the ones written by Charles Wesley, probably the greatest hymn writer of all time, and definitely the best ever in the English language. This year was the first time I ever attended Mass on Easter morning without ever once singing 'Christ the Lord is Risen Today' and it felt like it wasn't even Easter at all, it was so disappointing that I actually complained, and was told that whoever is responsible for hymn selection (I wasn't told who that is exactly) intentionally chose not to play that hymn precisely because it is a standard and thought people were tired of hearing it. 'Well', I responded, 'you chose poorly.' I was told that I was far from the first one to make the same complaint.
